Write Your Legacy
My friend Suzanne asked God what He wanted her to do now that she had an empty nest. She felt He gave her a question back: “What can you do for Me that no one else can do?” After contemplating that, she had an answer. “Tell my story.”
The Israelites were asked to remember their history and recount it to successive generations. All of us have a story to tell. A legacy to impart. A testimony means to tell something firsthand or authenticate a fact. Don’t you think you owe it to your family to leave a written account of your testimony, telling not only about your life but how Jesus changed you?
Let your descendants better understand how you used your specific skills and talents to become the person you are now. Write about your career, life-changing circumstances, family, friends, relationships such as teachers, pastors, coaches, mentors, and/or bosses who touched your life.
Think about these: What are some of these most spiritual lessons you have learned that can help your next generation? What major decisions changed your life? Who were some of the unforgettable people in your life? What inspired you the most? A hero? A book? An experience? Who have you influenced for good?
Suzanne is still writing her story. Why not let the generations after you have a personal down-home written legacy about the life you have been privileged to live? The Psalmist wrote:
“We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.” (Psalm 78:2 NIV)
