You Are Him Here
How could a reformed juvenile delinquent teach our church congregation a big lesson? Well, she did!
The smiling teenager standing on our church’s podium that Sunday evening took the microphone when our pastor handed it to her. She explained that she had been in a detention home for delinquents in our town for the past months. Yet, on weekends she had been allowed to visit in homes of our various church families. Now she was going home.
Then looking out across the sanctuary, she said, “You fed me, clothed me, loved me and best of all, you introduced me to Jesus. I am so thrilled with what Jesus has done for me I want to thank Him. But you are Him here, so I will thank you,” she said. “You are Him here. You are Him here,” she repeated over and over, as her index finger pointed out across the congregation.
Going home to parents. Someday going also to an eternal home with her heavenly Father. After returning to her hometown she reached out to other girls dealing with temptations like those she had overcome. Influencing others for good.
The week after her goodbye speech, our pastor had dozens of plaques made for those of us who wanted to display one in our home. It read simply “You Are Him Here” as a reminder that we are Christ’s representative to anyone who knocks on our door.
Teresa of Avila, a 16th century nun said: “Christ has no hands on earth but yours. No feet on earth but yours, no eyes of compassion on earth but yours. He has no body on earth but yours.” Wow, what a reminder!
Prayer: God, help us be sensitive to those who come across our paths. Thank you for allowing us to be Your representatives on earth. Amen.
Scripture:1For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord [in prayer] will be saved.” But how will people call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how will they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher (messenger)?” (Romans 10:13-14 AMP)
