Honor Your Mom This Week

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood. On this day we remember and honor our own special mother.  Or our foster mom, adoptive mom, stepmom, grandmom, or aunt who may have “mothered” us. Maybe your mother wasn’t loving or nurturing but you had a substitute mom in the way of a neighbor or friend’s mother. Whoever that special woman was in our life, let’s thank her—either in person or by recalling some pleasant memories.

Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Then “The Mother’s Day International Association” came into being on December 12, 1912, to promote and encourage meaningful observances of the event. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother’s Day, as a day for American citizens to “show the flag in honor as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” It was a time to especially honor mothers whose sons had died in World War I. 1

Mother’s Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant. And more phone calls are made on this day than any other special occasion. Moms are showered with gifts, cards, flowers, phone calls, hugs, and other tokens of affection. If your mother is not living, why not share remembrances of her with others? And why not honor another mother also who made a difference in your life?

From Proverbs 31we read about the noble mother and wife:

Her teachings are filled with wisdom and kindness
as loving instruction pours from her lips.
She watches over the ways of her household
and meets every need they have.
Her sons and daughters arise in one accord to extol her virtues,
and her husband arises to speak of her in glowing terms.
“There are many valiant and noble ones,
but you have ascended above them all!”
Charm can be misleading,
and beauty is vain and so quickly fades,
but this virtuous woman lives in the wonder, awe,
    and fear of the Lord.
She will be praised throughout eternity.
So go ahead and give her the credit that is due,
for she has become a radiant woman,
and all her loving works of righteousness deserve to be admired
at the gateways of every city! (Prov. 31:26-31 The Passion Translation)

Now, let’s enjoy a laugh as we read what some elementary age children said about their moms. This was enclosed in a church bulletin I received some years back:

“Why God Made Moms”

Q: Why did God make moms?  A: Mostly to clean the house.

Q: How did God make Moms? A: God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

Q:Why did God give you to your mother and not some other mom? A: God knew she likes me a lot more than other people’s moms like me.

Q: Why did your mom marry your dad? A: My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.

Q: What did your mom need to know about your dad before she married him? A: Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Q: Who is boss at your house? A: Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.

Q: What’s the difference between moms and dads? A: Moms work at work & work at home, & dads just go to work at work.

Q: What does your mother do in her spare time? A: Mothers don’t do spare time.

Q: What would it take to make your mom perfect? A: On the inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

We can laugh at these, but we do truly appreciate mothers?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of our mothers. We are so grateful for mothers who made sacrifices to see us through challenging times as well as happy times. Forgive us for the way we sometimes took them for granted or disobeyed them or neglected to express our love and thanks. Show us creative ways to honor them or their memory—not just one day this month but on other days too. Amen.

Scripture : “Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother—this is the first commandment with a promise— That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.” (Eph.6:2-3 AMPC)
