A Dream and a Doctor

My friend Martha related this story to me some years before she died at an advanced age. As a speaker and intercessor, she travelled to 40 nations leading prayer teams. Or she went with just one other intercessor to pray strategically for regions where various prayer ministries sent her. Here is her “double miracle” story as she told me.

Martha speaking: God often uses other people to help us accomplish His purpose. Let me tell you about a stranger who saved my life. After God first saved his life. It began on a battlefield in Iraq.

While serving with the U.S. military in Iraq, Dr. R was surprised when a fellow doctor dreamed that he, Dr. R, was shot. The dream seemed so real, it prompted his doctor friend to say, “I have one of the new special flak vests. Since I am not going out today, I want you to wear my jacket.”

Dr. R complied. And he did experience the exact scenario of his friend’s dream. An enemy bullet hit him. But it did not penetrate into his body—instead the impact ripped through the jacket. But Dr. R emerged unscathed!

Fast forward to his retirement from the military and return to a medical practice in my area. I fell critically ill soon after returning from a prayer journey to Israel, Syria, and Jordan. While I was lying in bed at my home in northwest Florida. many intercessors began praying for me. Then I was admitted to the hospital as I had gone into septic shock. After several doctors were baffled about how to treat my condition, a different doctor, Dr. R was called to look in on me. When he questioned me about where I had been lately, I told him I’d been to the Middle East when they had sandstorms.

Because of his experience in Iraq and elsewhere, he said he was acquainted with the various spores and contagions carried in those sandstorms. He recognized my symptoms and was able to diagnose and treat me. After five days I returned home and was back to whole health in a relatively short time.

What the enemy meant for evil, God turned for good! Not only did He preserve my doctor’s life when he was shot, but God allowed him to be the one with the knowledge of the illness that was killing me. I thank God for doctors and for the healing virtue of Jesus. If it had not been for my Lord, my doctor, and my intercessors, the enemy’s plan to cut my life short would not have been thwarted.

What about Dr. R? He became my primary doctor for several years until he relocated to another community. But as long as I was his patient, he never ended my medical visit without asking me to pray for him!” End of Martha’s story to me.

Martha lived some years after that healing. Psalm 91 was her steadfast promise from her Heavenly Father.  As age crept upon her, she stopped travelling and retired to her home “prayer chair” to pray for the nations. I visited her more often and listened fascinated as she related numerous times when God miraculously protected her when she was in danger.  “Just hang on to Psalm 91,” she would say. “God will protect you where He sends you, like He did me.”

Scripture: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. (Psalm 91:1-3 NIV)

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the various friends You bring into our life. May we cherish the lessons we learned from them that helped us in our spiritual growth. I thank You too for those who stand in the prayer gap for us. Help us to likewise live so that we impact others for the Savior. I pray in His name. Amen.
