Children Need Our Prayers

All children need prayer— the godly and the wayward, the young and the adult.  Children are indeed a gift of the Lord. Our part is to love them unconditionally and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in praying for every one of their circumstances.

The Psalmist writes: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward.” ( Psalm 127:3 NKJV) “Children are God’s love gift; they are heaven’s generous reward.” (Psalm 127:3 TPT)

In my book, A Mother’s Guide to Praying for Your Children, I offer practical and Scriptural prayer suggestions covering a multitude of situations. Here are some you may want to pray for your children.

A practical prayer: Lord, guard my children (names) from wrong influences, wrong environment and wrong friends. Bring the right friends into their lives at the right time. Keep them from being deceived and walking in error.

Biblical prayer: May my child (name) like Jesus keep increasing in wisdom (mental) and stature (physical) and in favor with God (spiritual) and man (social). (Luke 2:52)

Salvation: May my children know/accept Jesus as their personal Savior and Lord. (2 Peter 3:9)

Protection: Thank you, dear God, that You command Your angels concerning (names) to guard them in all their ways. (Psalm 91:11)

Wisdom: May the Spirit of the Lord rest upon them: the spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge and the reverential fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:2)

Students: Lord, may my child like Daniel, show aptitude for every kind of learning (be) well informed, quick to understand and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. May he/she speak with wisdom and tact… and be found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding …and the ability to solve difficult problems. (Daniel 1:4; 2,14; 5:12. NIV)

School: Lord, I pray for their teachers, coaches, close friends. May these key people and others they encounter have a positive influence on them. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. (Timothy 2:1- 4 NIV; Proverbs 27:17 NASB)

Friends who have a bad influence. To pray for a child who is being adversely influenced by peers, God may lead you to pray as David did when he believed his son Absalom was hearing wrong advice. He asked the Lord to “turn (the) counsel into foolishness” (2 Samuel 15:31). You may be led to ask Him to remove the friends. Ask God for prayer strategies.

Employed: If your children are employed in the marketplace, pray for their bosses, co-workers, and the company that employees them. Pray that your children would:

  • Be a good employee, working willingly, doing their best, using their skills and talents.
  • Have good relationships with employers and fellow workers.
  • Learn how to balance work responsibilities with home life and not become a workaholic.
  • Be a good witness for Jesus, with the Holy Spirit’s help.
  • Be paid a good salary.1

Future:  Thank You, Lord, that You have plans for all my children, plans for their welfare, and not for calamity, to give them a future and a hope. Thank You that You will fulfill Your purpose for them. (Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 138:8 NIV)

Wayward Children: God, grant my child, (name) repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, that he/she may come to his/her senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:25,26a NASB)

Wayward: Dear Lord, open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God in order that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Jesus. (Acts 26:18 NASB)

Declaration about Your Children from our book Warfare Prayers for Women:

I declare that my children will see the light of the gospel of Christ. They shall be taught of the Lord, and great will be their peace (see Isaiah 54:13). The Lord will guide them in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake, and goodness and mercy will follow them all the days of their lives (see Psalm 23:3, 6). In the name and under the authority of Jesus Christ, my Lord, I forbid all powers of evil from exerting influence over my children or grandchildren. I come against any spirits of witchcraft, mind control, occult activity, ungodly music, lust, perversion, rebellion, rejection, suicide, anger, hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness, pride, deception, unbelief, fear, greed, addictions and other snares trying to lure them away from God. I declare the enemy’s power is null and void, and all assignments against them are cancelled by the blood of Jesus Christ (See Ephesians 6:12, Deuteronomy 7:25-26; 18:10-12). I release them to be all that God created them to be! 2
