Fear vs. Faith
Fearful? That word is packed with emotion–anxious, apprehensive, nervous, frightened, distressed. But what about God’s remedy? Faith!
Fear and faith both start out on the same path, because both believe something is going to happen. Fear anticipates something bad. Faith anticipate something good. Fear is the opposite of faith.
Faith, according to the Bible is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen… Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11-1, 6).
One commentator says: “Faith goes beyond what we can perceive with our physical senses, so it does not work by the rules of science. Faith allows us to believe that the invisible God can do what is physically impossible. In that sense, faith is built and grows on a spiritual plane.”1
When we acknowledge our specific fears, we have started on the road to overcoming them. God can then begin to show us ways to confront our fear-producing situations. Throughout the Bible, we read verses that assure us our God is there, watching over us.
One of my favorites was when David said of God: “You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.” (Psalm 32:7)
Psalm 91 is encouraging to those who are fearful. It speaks of safety and the abiding presence of God:
“You shall not be afraid of the terror at night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday… Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:5-6, 9-11)
We can choose faith that God will help us through our ordeal, or we can let fear devour us. So why don’t we place our faith in God with trust, confidence, and assurance that He is working for our best.
Prayer: Lord show me things I need to know– help me to become an overcomer and a fearless person You created me to be. I ask in the name of Jesus Christ my loving savior, Amen.
Scripture: Call to me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things, fenced in and hidden, which you do not know– do not distinguish and recognize, have knowledge of and understand.” (Jeremiah 33: 3 AMP)
