Let’s Smell The Flowers
Whenever I think I just can’t get take any more hard times– that I’ve reached my limit– I remember a lesson I learned many years ago from my grandson, Benjamin, when he was two.
While walking with him from my house to his, it seemed we never would get to his front door because he stopped to smell all the flowers along the way.
In my impatience I wanted to get on with the journey, to reach our destination. But his pleasure in the beauty and fragrance of the flowers made his walk a delight.
I realized how I sometimes tend to hurry through life, not savoring my “golden moments” and the beauty of God’s creation along the way. Yes, tough times come. But even when our path leads through hardships, we can find flowers along the journey.
And we can remember with the thorns of the rose also comes the perfume.1
Now grown, this grandson often sees that I have flowers to smell and enjoy! And I recall those wonderful walks and talks we used to take. So, I thank him with a great big hug.
How about you? Do you too need to slow down and appreciate the beauty around you? And like me, need to value even small events that turn out to be big blessings?
This old hymn, “For The Beauty of the Earth,” expresses my heart so well.
“For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies;
Christ our God, to Thee we raise This our hymn of grateful praise.”2
Scripture: For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth once again; The time for singing has come, And the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree has budded and ripens her figs, And the vines are in blossom and give forth their fragrance. (Song of Solomon 2:11-13 AMP)
Prayer: Father God, thank You that You remind me even in the actions of a child how I need to enjoy the perfume and beauty of each precious day. Truly I am grateful to You. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
