Wrong Number?

My mobile phone rang at 7:32 a.m. this morning. I didn’t recognize the number, but the nearby town listed was where several friends live. So, I answered, “Hello.”

“Can I speak to Mark?” a man’s voice asked.

“Sir, you have a wrong number. There is no Mark here.”

“I am so sorry. Please forgive me,” he apologized.

“That’s alright, I am just sitting in my prayer chair.”  I told him.

“Well, then please pray for me. I need it,” he said.

And so I did.

Today’s page in the prayer journal someone gave me has a quote from Robert Lewis Stevenson:

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.

And then a quote from Ecclesiastes 11:6:

In the morning sow your seed, And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper…”

I wrote in the prayer journal: “That wasn’t a wrong number early this morning. It was a seed to sow. A person to reach. And my life was blessed because of a stranger’s request.”

A stranger, yes. A connection arranged by God? Maybe. But this call made my day. You see I’ve been house-bound for some days following a hospital stay. No visitors and only phone contacts. What a booster to have someone ask me for prayer! The Bible encourages us to pray for one another.

I am sure you have had coincidences that you believed were God-incidents—some unplanned happening that blessed you.

The psalmist knew how to praise God. “Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things! And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.” Psalm 72:18-19 NKJV)

When we recognize special incidents—“wondrous things”– as something we could not have arranged ourselves, we can pause to thank our Heavenly Father for them.

Prayer: Father, thank You for experiences that bless us on ordinary days. Today I believe You had a hand in connecting me to someone who needed You. Keep me aware of opportunities to touch other people in small ways, even if they are strangers. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Scripture: Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. You alone are God.  (Psalm 40:5) NKJV)
